Clearing Blocked Drains in 5 Easy Ways

You already know the warning signs. It takes few more minutes for your sink to drain. You are noticing water flooding around in the shower. You are smelling foul odours. All these are indications that you may encounter a clogged drain in the future. The next thing you know, you already have your drains completely blocked. Well, this is something that you really have to deal with without further delay or face the wrath brought by a useless bathroom or a burst pipe.

You have tried to remove the gunk and excess hair from the surface of your drain, but nothing happens. You called for a plumber, but didn’t come. What will you do? Attend to any blockage in your drains with the following ways before you resort to a costly emergency plumber.

  • Use of Bent Wire Hanger

Take a wire coat hanger then straighten it out. Bend one end over so you will form a small hook. Push it down your drain cover then begin fishing. You are expected to pull all nasty stuff and hair causing the clog in your drain. Let hot water run through to clear up everything.

  • Mixture of Baking Soda and Vinegar

Combine a third cup of baking soda with a third cup of vinegar. Immediately pour the mixture sown your drain as it fizzes quickly. It is the fizzing action of the mixture that removes hair, grime and gunk that built up in your pipe. Allow this to sit for an hour or overnight before flushing with hot water. Get as much baking soda as you can then pour the vinegar until you have cleared the clogged drain.

  • Cleaning of Pipes

Place an empty bucket right below the trap or the U-shaped pipe beneath your sink to collect the water that might spill out. Loosen the slip nuts at both ends of your pipe with a plumber’s wrench. Remove and turn the trap upside down as soon as it is already free. There would be a necessity for you to fish any debris inside the pipe. Tough gunk can be easily removed using an old toothbrush.

  • Use of Dish Detergent

You may pour a quarter cup of dish detergent into the bowl when you are having a blocked toilet. The soap will serve as a lubricant to break up any greasy residue in the bowl. Run hot water and be prepared for plunging. An alternative for this is a pair of rubber gloves in case the plunger fails to function well.

  • The Effectiveness of Caustic Soda

When using a caustic soda in unclogging your drain, make sure you wear eye protection and rubber gloves as it has the tendency to cause you nasty burns. Put ¾ gallon of cold water in a mop bucket, add three cups of caustic soda then stir it thoroughly using a wooden spoon. Pour the mixture down the clogged drain when it starts to fizz and heat up.

These are the five easy and quick approaches in dealing with the most stubborn clogs in your drains. Take consideration in trying their effectiveness.
