Active Open Loop Solar System
Of all the active heaters that can be purchased on the market, the active open loop is the cheapest. Most of the system have a heat exchanger. The purpose of the aforementioned is to transfer the heat to the water. However, in this type of system, presence of heat exchanger is no longer necessary. This is because the system has its own controller that differentiates the temperature at the tank of the water heater and the collector. If there are any instances that the temperature of the two vary, the controller will use the pump and will let the water flow from the tank up until it reaches the collector of the water heater. After heating the water, the hot water will then return to the tank to be stored. For some other version of active open loop system, it uses an electricity panel that activates a circulating pump. Typically, this version is known to have an excellent performance also because of the not producing any heat loss, especially at night.
This type of solar water heater pumps water during daytime. Thus, direct circulation system can be extremely efficient and reliable in places with constant warm temperature. However, this type of system can be a setback if used in an area which experiences constant cold temperature. Although it can still operate, it needs to have a regular maintenance.
Active Closed Loop Solar Water Heating System
For active closed loop, heat transfer fluid or HTF will run through the solar collectors and on the heat exchanger. Commonly, HTF is a glycol fluid that is pumped by the system to the collectors. The heat will then be transferred to the water that’s within the tank. Unlike direct-circulation system, this system is most used in places with cold temperature. Even if active closed-loop has a reliable freeze protection, homeowners should always examine the glycol at least once a year. Also, glycol should be replaced after 3 to 10 years. On the other hand, this still depends on the temperature of the water heater and the glycol’s quality. Compared to other systems, this a bit complicated since it requires either a tank with a heat exchanger coil or an external heat exchanger.
Passive Solar Water Heating System
Passive water heaters can be classified into two: Thermosiphon and the Integral Collectors Storage (ICS). Unlike the active system, this system doesn’t require wirings, controllers and pumps which make the system simple. Typically, when you opt for this type, the tank used to store the water is situated at the top part of your roof. With that being, water coming from the supplier or from your well will flow directly to the roof where it’ll be heated. After the heating procedure, heated water will run through the gallon heater at the ground level.
